High Black Maternal Unalive Rate

 Black Maternal Death Rate

A nurse at Dallas Regional Medical Center dismissed a laboring  black woman’s pain: “White Women in Nursing Are Weapons to K*ll Black Moms”

A nurse at Dallas Regional Medical Center dismissed a laboring black woman’s pain to ask irrelevant questions while ignoring her screams. Her son was reportedly born just 12 minutes after her not being taken seriously.

I say the reason for the high black maternal mortality rate is racial hatred. There are many causes of the high death rate of back mothers.

Research consistently highlights a range of interconnected causes behind the disproportionately high maternal mortality rates among Black women in the United States,

While white bias is a recognized factor, it's part of a broader network of issues, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Here are the key contributing factors:

Ÿ  Racial Bias and Discrimination in Healthcare: This includes implicit and explicit bias from providers, lack of cultural competence, and historical mistrust of the medical system within Black communities.

Ÿ  Underlying Health Conditions: Black women have a higher prevalence of chronic health issues that increase pregnancy risks.

Ÿ  Social Determinants of Health (SDOH): Factors like limited access to quality healthcare, socioeconomic disparities, environmental hazards, and systemic racism contribute to poor health outcomes.

Ÿ  Chronic Stress from Racism: The ongoing experience of racism and discrimination can negatively impact maternal health.

Ÿ  Healthcare System Factors: Issues such as inconsistent care, provider shortages, insurance limitations, and "maternity care deserts" (areas with limited access to maternity services) affect the quality and availability of care.

Addressing these multiple interconnected factors is crucial to improving maternal health outcomes for Black women, according to Tulane University

The maternal mortality rate for Black mothers doesn’t improve with socioeconomic status or educational level. For example, data from 2007 to 2016 show that among women with a college degree or higher, the pregnancy-related mortality ratio was five times higher for Black mothers compared with white mothers.

Never ask for a white nurse or doctor if you have a choice.

Black maternal mortality by state

There are several reasons maternal mortality varies in different states or regions.

  • Guidelines for caring for expectant mothers vary between states and often reflect social and political factors in each state.
  • Mothers in rural areas are almost twice as likely as mothers in urban areas to experience maternal mortality, so states with larger rural populations are often at risk.
  • States with higher percentages of at-risk populations, such as Black mothers, may have higher mortality rates.

Because several states do not report Black maternal mortality rates, it’s difficult to compare states accurately. However, the CDC does publish maternal mortality rates for all mothers. According to the latest numbers Red States: Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama and Louisiana are the states with the highest maternal mortality rates.
